Dealing with Dementia
This course will cover the dementia diagnosis and prognosis. When to be concerned about a possible dementia diagnosis, who to contact, and what testing is required. The signs, symptoms, and stages of dementia will be reviewed. Medications and therapies for early dementia will be discussed and how long these medications are effective. The different behaviors that may be seen in people with dementia will be discussed and tips given for handling each behavior in the home setting. The course will include communication techniques and how to continue to create moments of joy and quality of life. Community resources for persons with dementia and families will be given out in the class. Hands on demonstrations and interactive discussions will be utilized for a broader understanding of dementia and what it means to live with this disease.
