Chester County History (Part 1): Our Beginnings What was happening in Chester County prior to William Penn’s arrival in 1682? First there was the land with its bounty of native plants and wildlife followed by the indigenous people who evolved into the Lenape culture. Then came the European explorers such as Verrazano, Hudson and Mey. Early colonization attempts would follow with the Dutch, Swedes, Finns and the English all before Penn’s ‘Holy Experiment”. We conclude this course with Penn’s founding of Pennsylvania.
